Thunderbolt will never replace USB because they serve different functions. You will never see low-bandwidth devices such as keyboard/mice/USB stick using thunderbolt because it doesn't make sense.

The real question that I haven't seen anyone ask, is will this be Intel only or will other chipsets/manufacturers support it as well.

Also I don't know if anyone mentioned it but one of the reasons Firewire never took off was because of royalty fees that need to be paid for implementing it. Thunderbolt has no royalties on it and this should help drive adoption.

From the looks of it Thunderbolt will be able to replace eSata, Firewire, and maybe Expresscards.

US Senators (and Congressmen) write the laws of this country. If they want to make this type of information illegal, they are the ones who write the laws so they should do it that way. But as other people noted, there are some states which have laws making DUI checkpoint locations public information.

Bottom line, just because a Senator or two asks Apple to do something does not mean Apple should. They are doing it this way (the easy way) because it would be very difficult to pass as a law and it might not hold up in court.

This is horse *****! The current MacBook Pro has the best design of any laptop on the market. I love the glossy, black border surrounding the screen. I could go for update on the exterior casing. Maybe something along the lines of fiber glass. Reflective, but in some form of metal.

I looked through some of his older posts, and while none of them are quite as obvious about how shallow and uncaring he is you can tell that he probably doesn't include the whole story. For example, he likes to argue with his neighbors (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=978345&highlight=) I'm guessing that we only got half the story in that thread. Sounds like he was pretty rude in an Apple store. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=644656&highlight=) and one quote from that thread:
plus parking in a handicapped spot. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=928429&highlight=) So based on past examples of his attitude here, I think this is really the way he thinks, not just an attempt to troll.
You may certainly be right about this. On the other hand, I have encountered several trolls whose shtick (signature behavior) is identical to shallow and uncaring attitude. And the sense of entitlement is just typical for the trolls that were "born" in 2008 when the recession started.

Honestly, can you try to post without arguing against claims I never made? That is at least 3 times now and it shows a lack of honesty or reading ability. I am not sure which.
    The above text contains:
Strawman argument/claiming what I said wasn't true without providing any proof/Insults

I never said it was going to Mac only (though you have accused me of that twice). I agreed with the insinuation that it could be. I never said manufacturers would have to add it separately. I did say that the article you posted said only that it would be available to all and that it didn't say all would add it. Mainly, I said that, because you know, the article doesn't actually say that. Here's another recap for you:
Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only
    You: Bingo
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only
You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass
Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be true
You: Go on a rampage of insults

I think we are done. No point in debating someone that doesn't understand what he is reading and also makes up things to reply to. Arguing against someone that uses strawman arguments or misses common subtleties in language is bad enough. Arguing against someone that is making up things to argue against is pointless.Pot, meet kettle.

    ...which is still a bottleneck.

So what's your point? You like moderetly better bottlenecks?

    I'd rather eliminate them altogether.

...and you think most people who buy a MBP won't swap out the drive for a 7200RPM drive or an SSD and max out their memory?

    Intelligent...no genius level thinking!

an SSD is a moderately better bottleneck?

Also storage is more important than outright speed to some people on the go. Why do you want to take away their options?

Great. Since Apple puts that crap hard drive in there.

And Apple's SSDs are sooo awesome right? About the only thing they really have an edge at is booting up and you can thank Snow Leopard enhancements as much as the SSD for that. For all other tasks...average. The kicker is, you can't even upgrade them to something better/larger down the road...as things currently stand anyway.

What? You said the word Merom but didn't include a link to the guide? :p

Well anyways, if Apple could get Conroes into iMacs it would be great. A challenge I know (and I still personally think it is more likely to be a Merom iMac) but it would help to be that little bit more competitive. The rest is pretty much predictable, Merom for MBPs and eventually MacBooks and Mac Minis. Woodcrest for Mac Pro and MacServe (Macs in everything right ;) ). iMac's future is a big ?.Yeah, if they can fit a Conroe into the iMac, more power to Apple. I just hope it doesn't turn it into the blast furnace my iMac G5 was.

From what I can tell Merom is just a Conroe that can operate at a lower TDP. They're all just fabricated off the same piece of silicon. (Someone posted an image on this.)

Minimum wage needs to be increased, national healthcare needs to be implemented and tax holes closed. This country would be in a lot better shape as far as it's lower classes go, imo.

Min wage should be 10/ hour.. possibly 11 with the way this country is heading...

Cingular cellular service is only decent in a few areas and their customer service is the worst I've ever come across. If Apple wants to maintain/boost their image, Cingular will not help them in that area, not at all. Judging by this forum those things appear to be almost unanimous. I'd say it would be a bad move on Apples part to make an exclusive deal with Cingular for any bit of time. Anything longer than 6 months and Apple doesn't stand a chance succeeding. With competition mounting in the ipod arena, not updating their intel product fast enough and this. I'm afraid Apple will be hurting. Not something I wanna see.

Here, let me help you with that.

10 PRINT "Please enter the name of a US cellular provider"
    20 INPUT C$
30 PRINT C$ + " cellular service is only decent in a few areas and their customer service is the worst I've ever come across. If Apple wants to maintain/boost their image, " + C$+ " will not help them in that area, not at all. Judging by this forum those things appear to be almost unanimous. I'd say it would be a bad move on Apples part to make an exclusive deal with " + C$ + " for any bit of time. Anything longer than 6 months and Apple doesn't stand a chance succeeding. Seriously, I'd say one or two are ok with the service (I was a fan of Sprint PCS round about 1999-2001), but as far as coverage goes, they're all pretty much as bad as each other. Sure, NetCell is WAAAY better than ComuNet where you live, but where Fred lives, he can only get one bar on ComuNet and nothing at all with NetCell, but OmniCell gets a strong signal, but OmniCell doesn't even have a license where I am, I have to go with RuralFone.

We're almost done with the consolidations so I don't think coverage in general is going to improve. On the other hand, both GSM operators have announced plans to roll out UMA (GSM over 802.11g/Bluetooth), which means if they can't fix their effing networks, we'll be able to do it for them, soon. T-Mobile's should be announced any day now. I suspect once the GSM operators have it, the CDMA operators will follow.

As for customer service, the best solution is to sign for the shortest contract you can. That way, a bad experience can be followed by a quick walk to the local phone dealer (or even better, the Internet.) Don't ever, ever, accept a two year contract.

Oh and one more thing. There is no phone.

Yup. I agree. And I bet the new MBPs will ship immediately as well. What would be really cool is if Apple lowered the price of Aperture to $199 or so to make it more affordable to the photo piddlers among us. After all, surely Aperture 2 is going to have massive hardware and GPU requirements (read: QuadCore Mac + 4GB RAM + X1900 video card). That is really where Apple makes it's cash. Just dreaming, of course, because I can't justify a $300 software package when I'm just a dabbler. Lightroom beta has been fun though.
    No MBPs.

Obviously, you didn't buy Aperture when it first came out, only to find out you were beta testing software for Apple. Now, if I can just figure out what to buy with my $200 store rebate. Maybe update from PS7 to CS2...hmm.

That's incredible! How can that be the case? Here it is 28 days paid days off if you work a normal 5 day week.

Because is America, it's about business owners, profit, and magnificent wealth. Nothing else matters. A happy workforce is irrelevant if you can find a willing workforce ready to work for the lowest dollar and no benefits.

And, as someone said above, any attempt to work towards a more unified and happy workforce is labeled as socialist, communist, or some other -ist. In fact, just the other day, I commented on a friend's facebook post where he was lamenting such high taxes and having to support social programs. My retort involved how I would rather live in a country where people got paid livable wages and were able to support themselves and each other instead of driving all the money to the uppers while leaving the rest practically bankrupt. Someone else commented "Stalin and Lenin would be proud of you," referring to me. That's kind of what we live with.

Im a recent Mac User, research reveals the fact that AV companies are crying wolf about OSX being targeted by hackers since 2000 though.

What I do is scanning my Mail Downloads and Mail folder from time to time with ClamXAV, just to make sure no stupid Windows Trojans are taking up my precious HD Space.
Everything else is being solved with brain.app. Heck, ive even uninstalled Little Snitch, as it bogged down my system performance and its not needed if you know what you are doing with your system. I always keep my system up to date with the latest patches from Apple.

Someone should have paid attention to the Buyer's Guide.

I've had the money for an iMac for over a month now. I haven't bought it though.

I did, at the time, it said mid-product cycle. And I had to have the computer for school, so I had to get it then. I'm just sad.

See above I am testing this theory now and will report on the result in about a half hour.
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing the results. I just ripped a chapter to AVC using 768kps and 640x352 and playing it took my powerbook to 60%. We ARE talking about a powerful codec here.

But then again, 320x240 H.264 made my iBook G3 900 go chunky...

Having been bitten numerous times by McAfee, I never believe their press releases.

Way back, I subscribed to their virus and firewall software. I tested the firewall, and it worked. Until they updated it to a slicker looking interface. Some sixth sense made me test it again, and bingo, my computer was exposed. McAfee customer "support" was not interested. They had my annual subscription, and that was all they wanted.

After ripping all McAfee code out of my PC, I was dismayed to find that my employer signed up for McAfee products.

Months and months of slow PC, followed by bricking thousands of employee PCs with their encryption-at-rest software.

That's quite a sum of money! A bit more than my Power Mac cost me, even with that extra RAM.

It's seems to me that it's unlikely that the cost of litigation could have exceeded the cost of a settlement, so does that show that Apple expected to be found liable for patent infringement as charged?

You seem to be unfamiliar with our court system. This case could have dragged on for YEARS, and cost Apple a TON of money--possibly far more than 100 Million.

I think the big advantage to this downgrade will be buying clearance and refurbished Nvidia-based MBAs for 25% discounts... Unless Apple somehow fits a standard voltage SB CPU in the 13" MBA, I think most will be better off with C2D and Nvidia 320m at discounts.

Exactly what I was thinking I'd much rather have the 320M it makes youtube and other graphics accelerated apps so much better than the 9400M, can't imagine downgrading to igp.
