Still rockin' the 2008 24" Core2 Duo 3.06 Ghz iMac. Best Mac I've ever owned. Next Mac will be whatever the largest screen they make and fastest chip they have whenever this one dies. 100% sold on the iMac.

I'm still rockin on a 20 inch late 06 iMac. It's been relegated to email checker and emergency C4D node...the thing will not die.

I was looking through the Nibs in iTunes 7 and found this window titled "Phone Prefs". Who knows, this can just be for the iTunes Motorola phones.

It seems that App on its own is generic, but the combination with another word to define a particular thing is not... see

    Lady + Gaga
    Best + Buy
    Fack + Book
    Micro + Soft
    General + Electric
Pintos + Cheese .. okay, maybe not that

You may have a point there, but as long as we are throwing words around I always like to remember how important it is to choose the right words so the intended meaning is conveyed . . .

Micro = Small, Soft = Flaccid

    :D

Miles you make a great point... You also confirm that Apple better pull them, its a pointless app because if your so drunk then you can't operate a phone let alone an app.

Whatever. Just because you're over the legal limit doesn't mean you're so completely smashed that you can't operate a touch screen device. Using an iphone is much, much easier than driving a car while intoxicated.

That said, I don't want to make this about whether or not drunk driving is OK. We all know it's wrong. At least I hope we all know it.

The way I see it, a group of politicians get together to conceive some non-issue, complain about something that is completely legal, in order to score points with their constituents and look like they're being tough on drunk driving. I guarantee you that these guys have driven home drunk just as much as the average person. Maybe I'm being cynical, but come on! Don't we have enough on our plate already with all the actual work we need to get done. Enough with the goddamned showmanship already!

Ask apple to take the apps down, who are you kidding?

The iMac is huge (relatively speaking), are you telling me such a huge enclosure won't be able to dissipitate an extra 30W or so? It is only around 30W more!

Like it or not Apple will have to somehow fit the Kentsfield into their lineup, cos their advertising campaigns are going to look very lame when Dell simply cops their "switch" campaign style and come out with a "PC" with 4 heads and a "Mac" with only 2.

When Kentfield replaces Conroes and every $999 Dell ships with quad core, it is quite hard to justify buying a dual (in Apple's case, a $2000+ quad)

I completely agree with you: Apple need to get Kentsfield/Conroe into their lineup somewhere. They are the best bang/buck chips Intel are making so it seems insane that they aren't already using Conroe.

As for thermal constraints... Well, I was a big proponent of the iMac getting Conroe and am still quite shocked they went with Merom. There was a lot of discussion before the new iMacs were released as to whether the case could handle Conroe. I think it could, and I still do. But with Kentsfield you are literally sticking TWO Conroes in there when there is some doubt as to whether it can handle one. The 24" iMac could maybe handle it, but I'm doubtful the smaller sizes could. They currently use 32W Meroms, with Kentsfield we would be talking 100W+. Maybe even as high as 130W since Conroe is 65W and Kentsfield is two Conroe dies in one package.

I personally think that a mid-tower is the only option for Apple to incorperate Conroe/Kentsfield into their lineup. Kentsfield is certainly too hot and takes too much power to go into any of their existing consumer models. It wouldn't go in the Pro since they use the Xeon chipset and will be using Clovertown.

As you say, once PC manufacturers get their hands on Kentfield the consumer Macs are going to look very anaemic.

Is there any chance that they'll release the MBPs here?

I hope so, at the latest. Though I'm hoping more for this tuesday the 19th, sort of how apple released the iMacs a week before their "It's Showtime" event--keep everything staggered by a week or so.

But Photokina seems like a good opportunity to, if not announce publicly, at least silent update them.

"Macworld has confirmation from Apple that the new iMacs will support Target Display Mode but only when the device they are connected to is also a Thunderbolt equipped Mac."

    Is that true?

If this is true, then the new 27" iMacs will not serve as a mirror device for the iPad 2 (which shoots out video at 1080 p).

I understand where you are coming from. With your feet planted in set in concrete, unable to fathom future developments based on the experimental or high-end tech of the day, the Blu-Ray seems endlessly of value. Much like the tape reels of the 60s.

The BluRay is going away for one very specific reason: mechanical. By 2016 the flash memory chips for 50gb will probably be so everyday and cheap that bulky, mechanical BluRay will seem awkward. By 2019 I'd bet you can store several times more than a BluRay on medium-priced thumb-drive.

Proof? Look back 6 years when a 1gb thumb-drive was a huge chunk of cash. Look back 10 years when a 512MB thumb-drive was almost prohibitive to buy. The future is non-mechanical.
You are also stuck in current times. Physical media will be dead by then, everything is going to be cloud based, there will be no such thing as a physical copy of movies any more :)

is surely a good thing for Apple.
It is organisations like Greenpeace who are driving the agenda, because goverments and manufacturing companies are too complacent.
They should be welcomed with open arms at Mac Expo:rolleyes:

As much as I doubt that much massive growth, I'm more entertained by the "NEGATIVE" responses.
Not that I agree with them, (because I don't... I've used the WP7 and it's a decent phone with features people like that iOS will NEVER have)...
but mainly because having a negative reaction to a guess as to how other people will spend their money is such a infinitely retarded thing to do. X-D
Seriously, why the hell do any of you even care what type of phone other people decide to use? If you really DO like your iPhone, then you wouldn't.
Only an imbecil would make a personal purchase decision based mainly on what other people do.
The only reason anyone would care (besides being a stockholder, or Apple employee) would be that more than actually liking the phone itself you've bought the phone because you're a joiner.... you want to be 'popular' or in a 'majority'.
(Which honestly is a PATHETIC reason to make ANY purchase.)

    X-D

(btw, yes I'm an iPhone owner)

I hope to see the backlit keyboard back also. It should be a standard MacBook feature.

I think I'll be satisfied with gaming on an Air thanks to OnLive. In fact, it's the perfect machine for it. Just plug in a wireless 360 controller (and optionally an external monitor/HDTV) and play.

I did read it. It doesn't answer why there are no viruses today, now that Mac OS has greater market share than ever, when there were viruses back when it had a much smaller market share. The market share theory is pure nonsense. It doesn't stand up to simple math.

The theory that OS X is completely secure is equally nonsense.
You definitely don't need an anti-malware solution installed right now, but it is only a matter of time.

There is a reason malware isn't prevalent and it's certainly not because there are no flaws to be leveraged into exploits.

Just look at the security fixes of 10.6.7 update released a few days ago: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4581

Here's a list of some of the more serious 54 security fixes released

    AppleScript
A format string issue existed in AppleScript Studio's generic dialog commands ("display dialog" and "display alert"). Running an AppleScript Studio-based application that allows untrusted input to be passed to a dialog may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

    ATS
A heap buffer overflow issue existed in the handling of OpenType, TrueType and Type 1 fonts. Viewing or downloading a document containing a maliciously crafted embedded font may lead to arbitrary code execution.

Multiple buffer overflow issues existed in the handling of SFNT tables. Viewing or downloading a document containing a maliciously crafted embedded font may lead to arbitrary code execution.

    bzip2
An integer overflow issue existed in bzip2's handling of bzip2 compressed files. Using the command line bzip2 or bunzip2 tool to decompress a bzip2 file may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

    ClamAV
Multiple vulnerabilities exist in ClamAV, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issues by updating ClamAV to version 0.96.5. ClamAV is distributed only with Mac OS X Server systems.

    CoreText
A memory corruption issue existed in CoreText's handling of font files. Viewing or downloading a document containing a maliciously crafted embedded font may lead to arbitrary code execution.

    File Quarantine
The OSX.OpinionSpy definition has been added to the malware check within File Quarantine.

    ImageIO
A heap buffer overflow issue existed in ImageIO's handling of JPEG and XBM images. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

A buffer overflow existed in libTIFF's handling of JPEG encoded TIFF images and CCITT Group 4 encoded TIFF images. Viewing a maliciously crafted TIFF image may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

An integer overflow issue existed in ImageIO's handling of JPEG-encoded TIFF images. Viewing a maliciously crafted TIFF image may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.

    Image RAW
Multiple buffer overflow issues existed in Image RAW's handling of Canon RAW images. Viewing a maliciously crafted Canon RAW image may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

    Installer
A URL processing issue in Install Helper may lead to the installation of an agent that contacts an arbitrary server when the user logs in. The dialog resulting from a connection failure may lead the user to believe that the connection was attempted with Apple. This issue is addressed by removing Install Helper.

    Kerberos
Multiple cryptographic issues existed in MIT Kerberos 5. Only CVE-2010-1323 affects Mac OS X v10.5.

    Kernel
A privilege checking issue existed in the i386_set_ldt system call's handling of call gates. A local user may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges. This issue is addressed by disallowing creation of call gate entries via i386_set_ldt().

    libxml
A memory corruption issue existed in libxml's XPath handling. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

A double free issue existed in libxml's handling of XPath expressions. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.

    Mailman
Multiple cross-site scripting issues existed in Mailman 2.1.13. These issues are addressed by updating Mailman to version 2.1.14.

    PHP
PHP is updated to version 5.3.4 to address multiple vulnerabilities, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution.

    QuickLook
A memory corruption issue existed in QuickLook's handling of Excel files. Downloading a maliciously crafted Excel file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.

A memory corruption issue existed in QuickLook's handling of Microsoft Office files. Downloading a maliciously crafted Microsoft Office file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

    QuickTime
Multiple memory corruption issues existed in QuickTime's handling of JPEG2000 images. Viewing a maliciously crafted JPEG2000 image with QuickTime may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

An integer overflow existed in QuickTime's handling of movie files. Viewing a maliciously crafted movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. For Mac OS X v10.5 this issue was addressed in QuickTime 7.6.9.

A memory corruption issue existed in QuickTime's handling of FlashPix images. Viewing a maliciously crafted FlashPix image may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. For Mac OS X v10.5 this issue was addressed in QuickTime 7.6.9.

A cross-origin issue existed in QuickTime plug-in's handling of cross-site redirects. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to the disclosure of video data from another site. This issue is addressed by preventing QuickTime from following cross-site redirects.

A memory corruption issue existed in QuickTime's handling of panorama atoms in QTVR (QuickTime Virtual Reality) movie files. Viewing a maliciously crafted QTVR movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. For Mac OS X v10.5 this issue was addressed in QuickTime 7.6.9.

    Ruby
An integer truncation issue existed in Ruby's BigDecimal class. Running a Ruby script that uses untrusted input to create a BigDecimal object may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue only affects 64-bit Ruby processes.

    Samba
A stack buffer overflow existed in Samba's handling of Windows Security IDs. If SMB file sharing is enabled, a remote attacker may cause a denial of service or arbitrary code execution.

    Subversion
Subversion servers that use the non-default "SVNPathAuthz short_circuit" mod_dav_svn configuration setting may allow unauthorized users to access portions of the repository. This issue is addressed by updating Subversion to version 1.6.13. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.

    X11
Multiple vulnerabilities existed in FreeType, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution when processing a maliciously crafted font. These issues are addressed by updating FreeType to version 2.4.3

hoping for apple te thin the screen bezel. Also hope the main build will have no optical drive. but will make it optional. I do not need one, some do.

for all those crying for an optical drive. buy an external one. i bet most of you guys will benefit more of having an SSD+HDD instead of one of either with an optical drive.

next year i expect, slight resolution bump. hi-res option becomes standard. Lighter/ not thinner design. A better ventilation. hopefully 2 thunderbolt ports (instead of FW800) but only if we have advanced enough with converters from TB.

I do not expect usb3 i think apple will never, as they do with bluray. And as most of you are already very unpleased with this. The future is digital. Within 5 years 2K movies can be downloaded in minutes and also streamed. as far as usb3 apple will sell thier special Thunderbolt to USB3 converter for $30.

People crying for an Optical Driver where the same ones crying when the Floppy was removed from the original iMac and cried that it would fail. Sometimes these people just need a push in the direction or the vision of Apple. Knowing the PC industry they will still have Floppy and Optical Drivers when Apple moves to something else in the future. :p

Look at netflix and hulu plus. if you can get access to TONS of content through a subscription what is the point of owning an actual physical copy if you can watch it from your queue online on your device?

Have you ever actually watched Netflix or Hulu on a iPhone or iPad over 3G? It totally sucks - not even close to what it looks like when stored locally, especially on the iPad.

yes they do. For good or ill, more conflicts are being mediated out of court. This saves taxpayer money:), but also prevents case law from being made, leaving judges without precedent to refer to in other cases:(

I heard I think here at macrumors that Sony's mp3/phone is selling like hotcakes and I think they branded it as a walkman/cell phone.

What I hope is that the iPhone will be on Cingular, since my entire family and most of my friends are on it. I'd pass on the phone if they do one of those new deals where you're piggy-backing on other networks like Alltel (alltell, altell??) or it's on another carrier.
