**Edit, IMO i think its silly because whos gonna pay $14.99 for a movie on a tiny screen, and if they make it to watch on your computer then its just going to take hours and hours to download if you have a slow broadband connection

Some movies aren't much longer than hour long TV shows, and people have been downloading those regularly from iTunes. And like I said, there are a lot of people out there already downloading movies from the internet. My guess is there are also a lot of people who would love to have an easy option to get their movies online, but aren't tech savvy enough to know what bit-torrent is, or where to find illegal torrent sites, etc. Those types of people would probably jump all over an easy to access and use movie downlaod site. iTunes already has a great reputation, so consumer comfort is high with Apple in that regard.
Honestly though, it remains be seen until people are able to use the new service, but I have a feeling it will do quite well, even if it is geared for a small screen (with the option to watch fullscreen in iTunes on your computer.) Who knows though? The PSP UMD movie format is dead. But I think that's due to Sony's poor marketing and DVD comparable cost of UMD movies than anything else.

there is no such thing as charity in america, it always comes through commerce. why not just donate the $200 bux? does a lot more than the 10 bux you are donating now, so you can justify getting a new ipod. hell i would buy a red ipod just cos of the color i don't see why the cos has to be associated with it, if they're gonna do this they might as well just donate 10% of all ipod sales. at least it does something more than haveing a "show off" recipet for your so called act of charity.

I have no idea how this would be useful. Buffer times, connection loss, no WiFi around, these are all problems that will prevent this from working.

Well, a 3G connection is more or less the same as wifi, although its quite unstable.
3G in the UK is quite good in my opinion. I'll wait for the networks to come up with unlimited plans as they have been a bitch all these times.

Seems unfair to kill someone for robbery. Yes they're breaking the law, but only deserve a prison sentence. Do you really really think someone should be shot and killed for attempting to steal a few laptops and smash a few windows? If you do then man you have issues.

Let's face it folks. The real success of USB 3.0 and/or Thunderbolt external connections will really depend on native support from Microsoft Windows, like it or not (Mac fans kind of ignore the fact that most new desktop/laptop computers still ship with Windows 7 installed). My guess is that we will see Window 7 Service Pack 2 (probably due early 2012) add full USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt support, while Windows 8--probably due fall 2012--will support both connections natively.

as much as others "stole" from apple I bet apple "stole" just as much from other companies. funny how macrumors failed to mention that samsung may be counter suing because apple might have used some samsung tech without asking as well.

Is it necessary these days? Back in 1999 it was still difficult days to just get video going at a good rate. These days it isn't hard to get good graphics.
What would be the use of redundant graphics? It must be a very small wedge of the market.
Not everyone wants a GPU for graphics. Some want it for games. Some want it for CUDA/OpenCL. Some want it for future proofing (kind of an oxymoron with a Mac, but that's another story.)
Apple has been pushing the 'good enough' mantra on iOS users for a while now. Specs aren't the greatest, but it's good enough and the software does well. It doesn't always work that way in (real) computers. There are always customers who want/need a bit more.

Sell Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in a High Definition format to test the waters. I think a lot of people would buy it in HD since they already have computers capable of decoding it. Why the need to invest in an expensive HD DVD player?
Already I hear people grumbling that downloading these sub-DVD quality movies taking couple of hours even with high speed cable connections. HD quality would be about 6-8 times larger in file size and could take a day to download. Not sure if we are there yet...in terms of bandwidth.

I'd have to say most people care almost nothing about a case or liner notes for DVDs since there really isn't anything of substance. Usually a synopsis and a chapter listing. With DVDs the good stuff is actually on the DVD, and hopefully the download is the same, with menus and different audio tracks, etc. If not, there is no point to downloading movies.
But geez, ditch the jewel cases and liner notes and grow up already. Unless you're not grown up, in which case I envy you. Enjoy!

For those who do enjoy having the physical disc plus case, instert, etc. in their hands, great. There's absolutely nothing wrong what-so-ever in wanting that. Why would it? It's a matter of personal preference.
I would wager easily that most people do want and enjoy having that tactile experience of holding the case, reading the insert (if it comes with one), and placing the disc in the DVD player. The people who generally don't care about that sort of thing are the few who are ready for a service like this, or people who have been downloading TV shows and movies already, whether legal or otherwise.
I'm looking forward to downloading HD content for my iTV, but I'm going to miss having that case, and I'm an old man--again, being "grown up" has nothing to do with it.

Maybe the 'antivirus' for iOS.. will be more of a barrier, since they are wireless and bluetooth enabled etc... Isn't it pretty simple for certain programs to scan for vulnerable iOS devices.?
Seriously, how do you not get this? It is infinitely hard to scan for vulnerable IOS devices because they are not vulnerable! You can't be a barrier to viruses if a better barrier already exists (the OS itself) and is sitting between you and them.
The only way to get a virus onto an IOS device is to get it approved to be sold on the app store. If you think that's possible then you also have to believe that it's possible to write a virus that no anti virus software can detect, since Apple has better knowledge of the inner workings of IOS than any AV company.

...and 5 years later, with no major innovations since iPod Video, it makes sense that to not only counter Microsoft's Zune, but to maintain their market presence and sales (which is starting to slow), that a major innovation is required. I am NOT sold on portable video as a unique selling point, as no one spends a prolonged period of time looking at small screen devices (unless for gaming or limited web surfing), and I am more inclined to believe Apple will launch something radical that is as innovative as the original iPod. Perhaps with a far more sophisticated OS, a touch screen, some form of wireless capability (WiFi/Bluetooth 2.0) for interdevice media transfer/wireless headphones/broadcast/syncing, proper PDA functionality and the ability to use as a VoIP and/or 2/2.5G/3G phone, either internally or via Bluetooth. The number one selling point will be the touch screen and more advanced OS, allowing it to take on various roles. And if it doesn't, I'm going to make one, so there. (I kid you not!)
If Apple made a new handheld with PDA, video, and audio features based around the iPod innovations... I'm there man, I'd so buy one.

And that's a top game. Most decent games sell in the order of 1 million.
The Sims sold 16 million and doesn't need SLI at all which IMHO goes to show that developers should concentrate on original games instead of yet another FPS.

How will the home sync work? I don't want to screw up my iPod, my home library on my MacBook Pro & my iTunes library on my office G5.
I've downloaded iTunes 7, bought a game (same trouble w/my 5G; still no iPod software update yet to make the game work) & clicked to "Get Album Artwork," which seems to be running in the background. So far so good.
If you have a CD which has long pieces of classical music on it, they break it up into separate tracks even though there technically aren't any pauses in the music. On any decent CD player these tracks play back seamlessly -- without any gaps. iPod would insert a pause in between playing these.
Edit: The REAL question is have they updated iTunes to be a better video player? I hate watching TV or movies in the current version.

The extra $10 comes out of the $50/month wages of the iPod oompa loompa workers in China and goes to African AIDS relief.
It makes it so much more convenient for the Chinese to donate directly in this way.
