Amazing! I totally agree, I don't mind paying higher taxes here for better services and better rights.

I know someone who works in the public sector was told to get his working hours down because he was working more than the amount he was supposed to by law in his job. Was told to get it down to 42 hours a week I think.

Guess that would never happen on your side of the pond!

About 30 years ago, his holiness Ronald Reagan fired over 11 thousand Air Traffic Controllers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_Air_Traffic_Controllers_Organization_(1968)) for going on strike. One of their most important demands was for a 32 hour week, so that they would not be falling asleep on the job.

Today, a bunch of the scabs he hired to replace those controllers are retiring, putting a great deal of pressure on the system. If nothing else, I think the 32 hour week is a good idea if you like flying and arriving safely. Sadly, Reagan's firm stand has left us in a perilous situation, with controllers snoring in the tower and planes landing without help. So the NTSB's solution is to require that they get at least 9 hours between shifts, which I think is pretty scary.

Most of us would prefer these guys fresh and alert. All we need is one impressive crash (that will be blamed on this president) to get this issue really pushed to the forefront which will probably result in a controller getting fired and no real improvement to the system.

Welcome to America, take a moment to find out where the nearest emergency exit it, bearing in mind that it might be behind you.

i'm tired of companies taking our privacy so lightly. makes a consumer feel like a dumb piece of meat. i hope someone files a lawsuit over this. any sneaky tactics like this should be outright banned by the government. maybe once we get some politicians of a younger generation in there who are more aware of these issues they will actually do something to protect the consumer from greedy and arrogant corporations. i hope but i'm not sure i will ever see this dream realized the way government currently lets companies run rampant.

"Banned by the government?" Who do you think is BEHIND this technology. Companies can certainly use this info for things like targeted advertising, but the folks who REALLY want to know where you, or more likely people not as nice as you, are at any moment of the day are sitting in governments around the world. This technology is nothing new, and it doesn't take a smart phone to be able to be tracked. My dumb flip phone is probably pinging a tower every few seconds and logging my location on a database somewhere.

so, how does one go about getting the 1.2 update? It does not appear in my version of iTunes7Install Quicktime 7.1.3 (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/mac.html) then install iTunes 7 (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/). Connect your 3-5G iPod. Updater will appear in the new iTunes when you highligh the iPod in the left column. Eazy Peezy. :)

Seems like the application developers could add a link to such a feature in their code so the user could just assign core volume in each application prefs that would tell the system what amount to assign to that process. Maybe even have the system do that automatically to all applicaiton preferences so the choice appears in all general preference panes of each application.I don't know if it's up to Apple or the program developers to allow CPU/core assignment.

Could you get on an IM? I'd like to talk about the Guide we were talking about.

Sure they can get worse. They can make them thinner and even worse at dissipating heat. Form over function.

But I meant design looks wise...

If they make them worse at dissipating it is only because the chips can handle it.

If it destroys their whole business model, then it is not dumb to not "try it out".

Apple is clearly not interested in the subscription or rental business models.

    edit: Clarity
How does it destroy 'their whole business model'? I just think there has to be differentiation between movies and songs. Wheras I have no interest whatsoever (and never will) in renting songs (read: subscription model), I do have an interest in renting movies. I can listen to the same song 10 times over in one day. Can I do the same with a movie? Yes. Will I? No.

I can count the number of movies I've watched more than twice on both my hands. So can a lot of people out there. If you're really interested in being a collector and keeping the movie, downloading it off iTMS is a dumb idea.

So is it dumb for Apple to ignore a market of people such as myself? Yes. Does it destroy their business model to offer movie rentals (NOT TV shows or music)? You explain that to me

In that case I would love to know what happened to other half-dozen or so companies that handed out leaflets outside of their allotted "zone", or the chaps that went around spotting people who had red badges on, and handing out free USB Flash-drives to whoever they found! :D

Ok, granted, I wasn't there, so I was basing my comments on tech conferences I've attended here in the States. But those people were probably violating their terms of contract as well, and maybe MacExpo had less tolerance for GreenPeace because they had already been forewarned not to use their normal sidewalk tactics at the Convention (especially considering GreenPeace probably received their space pro-bono and thus should be expected to even more scrupulously adhere to the rules).

LOL, yet here you are claiming Thunderbolt is DOA. Hilarious.
Again, for those with reading difficulties, I made no such claim. I did agree with a post that implied it might be relegated to being considered Mac only. I'll still agree that might be what happens. I hope not, but I hoped FW would be successful too.

I am pretty sure a google search will find some adult-ed courses that might be helpful for you.

Creative's stock up 30% in after-hours trading. The $100 million is a drop in the bucket for Apple, but it will certainly help Creative...

Which is probably why they sued. Knowing they are running out of cash, they figured "Let's jump on the bandwagon and sue someone".

Really, though $100 million isn't all that significant to a company with reserves like Apple has, vs. having a possible patent infringement hanging over them that could, given a ruling against them, cost much more.

I guess so. It's good that there's been a settlement though. For both companies I think this is a positive outcome.

They do build in obsolescence into the ipod as you can't replace the battery (easily). It does become a disposable item, although a pricey one at that. I do love the ipod (even though I don't own one) but this puts me off to the point where I just can't go through with actually buying one. My experience with rechargeable batteries in mobile phones and lap top isn't good.

My first gen 5GB iPod is still going strong after 5 years.

Also, even if the battery went totally dead, why would you throw a perfectly good iPod away? I use mine as a portable hard drive and in the car with an FM transmitter (connected to the lighter outlet to power the iPod) to listen to podcasts and music. Neither requires the battery for either of these functions. If you jog or bike or listen to your iPod while travelling and don't have access to power then replacing the battery is problematic but not impossible. In fact the local Microcenter here in Denver sells iPod battery replacements for less than $100 and will install them if you don't want to.

I don't think this is the problem some people seem to think it is and if anyone reading these posts wants to throw out their iPod that has a bad battery please contact me and I will gladly take it off your hands.

hahaha, if you read the original report by The Guardian link here:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/apr/20/iphone-tracking-prompts-privacy-fears

You will see that it does indeed state the Apple EULA at the end of the article, the part that seems to have been strangely left off all same reports in Mac Rumors, Engadget, 9TO5MAC all quoting The Guardian source :rolleyes:

You don't have to be a fanboi to laugh at this one. WP7 may be a completely reworked experience - but it doesn't matter at this point. No one wants a Windows phone anymore.

I predict by 2015 the industry pundits will be asking when Microsoft is going to pull the plug on their Windows Phone unit.

Oh yeah - you said it - qualified in "buisiness" [sic] but works in finance - surely that should read - holds some form of accountancy degree and is an accountant? No? under-qualified then. (or clerk)

Oh I see, you're a smart ass. Oh how cute!!!

Tell ya what little boy, Besides a business degree I also hold CCE and CFCC from the AACE as well as a PMP from the PMI. On top of all that, I have worked in the industry for over 35 years. I forgot more about business that your sarcastic smart ass will ever know.

And trust me, my degree and certs have little to do with it. A grade school kid knows that a company that just posted a quarter with revenues of $16.43 billion (which is an increase of 13% from the same period in 2010), and profit of $5.23 billion isn't "DEAD"...

Obviously you don't understand that, in which case, you wouldn't even be a good clerk. Judging from you childish post, I do think I've met before. Haven't I heard you say "Would you like fries with that Sir"????

    You can watch while downloading.

I was able to begin about 5 minutes into download -- barely enough time to get the snacks.

really? thats sweet! I'll have to tell my friends about that.

I havn't downloaded a movie yet, I'm still kinda in limbo about which direction to go... download, or wait for hd... or what?

we need a poll now for how many videos you have bought.

Perfect. That works for me 'cause if Apple doesn't present a redesigned MBP with an easy access HD Bay, I'm definitely going C2D MacBook. Already "bought" a pair of 2.5" external USB 2 cases today - for FREE after rebate - in anticipation of removing the stock drive and replacing it with a Seagate 160. :)

Same here if it happens to just be a processor upgrade without adding some of the needed features
