If Apple is planning to introduce a video iPod and movie service on the 12th, might it makes sense to release updates of some products, such as the MBP, the previous week, giving the full spotlight to the new products. There really doesn't need to be a special press event for an updated laptop, even if it does have a new case (as I don't expect it to be too different). It would certainly give Apple lots of positive press about the updates and fuel even more talk about what was coming the following week.

    Just my usual 2 worth....

Completely Agree. I think there were also rumors of releases on Sept. 5 so that could be for the laptops.

The complete refresh of the iBook (now macbook) line didn't get any media fanfare, so I don't see why an updated MBP should be any different.

just do a quiet press release on the website, and save the *new* products and download services for the press event.

Then if they wanted to at the event, just say that the majority of our computers now have the Core 2 Duo processors and were introduced last week, and have begun shipping today. or something to that effect

Not keynote at AppleExpo Paris, but a press event that day in the US and streamed to London? So crazy it might be true...

$15 downloads just won't fly with me, nor will $10. As it stands, I can buy a DVD from Amazon for $10, get it the next day, and not have to back it up somewhere... Gotta get it down to $5 or less for me to be interested-- maybe $10 for pre-releases.

I'm all over a video iPod though.

Apple is the copyright holder of those images and they provide the right to use those images in Applications running on macs via the API on a Mac running OS X.

So why can't you use an official Apple API on the iPhone? That's crazy.

Very sad. Someone lost their life over something so trivial. And said that the guard has to live with knowing he took a life. :(

Sad indeed. Sympathies to the guard, who at least is alive to know what happened; if he hadn't done it, odds are too high that he wouldn't be.

The whole point of Thunderbolt is you can daisy-chain devices (up to 6 I think), so one port goes a long way.

Besides the three-monitor doohickery on the 27", I struggle to see why 95% of people would need two ports often. But still, nice to have :)

I believe you are mistaken. As far as I know, there is no risk of losing a copyright if you failed to defend against previous infringers. If I were to guess, I think you are talking about trademark law, which is different.

There are many classic examples, but currently Adobe has a policy where it seeks to prevent people from using "Photoshop" in a generalized way, since if it solidly becomes a synonym for digital photo manipulation in the language, they will lose their trademark. If Adobe is shown to not go after those who use Photoshop in a generalized manner, in the future they will be less able to defend against it in the future.

As far as I know, this has no relevancy to the current situation, since we are talking about copyright, not trademarks.

    You are correct.

While I don't defend Apple here, to be fair they do have a trademark/tradedress argument. The issue is whether or not the images of the macs would confuse someone as to the source of the software (i.e.: they would think it's Apple software). Aside from the fact that this is unlikely, referential use of trademarks is ok. For example, if you were to write a book about the New York Giants, a trademarked term, you probably wouldn't have to call it the "New York National Football Conference football club." Here, I think the use of the icons is clearly referential, and no different than if the icon was replaced by text like "Cliff's Macbook Pro" (which also includes trademarked terms).

Curious that everyone is clamoring for a thunderbolt-enabled machine, but there isn't a single thunderbolt drive available on the market.

I guess some people just need to feel like they have new stuff even if it's totally pointless.

Pointless right now, but what about in 6 month? The price of the iMac will just be the same then but it is very likely some TB displays and external storage device have been released. So why not by now and wait for the TB peripherals?

Plugging in one cable to connect and external monitor while daisy chaining multiple external storage sources is far from pointless to me...

Just like all of the netbooks with optical drives make the MBA look bad?

Netbooks do not have optical drives. Ultraportables do.

The MBA looks good as a netbook. It looks bad as an ultraportable.

MBA and MBP are two different markets.

MBA is for people that want light. MBP is for people that want a full featured notebook.

So you want a big MBA.

If they could have the same processors, that would happen already at 13".

The current design is still beautiful and didn't get old over time - still one of the best designs for Laptops ever ... but hey, they might come up with something even more 'magical'.

    For a desktop OS, sure.

Ivy Bridge will bring it up to 3 displays. AMD has 6 displays for embedded systems now.

Yes, you know what an "app store" means if you know what an "app" means.

Does an "app" mean an Apple program?

It's doesn't matter what MS calls it. There's a class of programs everywhere called "applications". There's no other name for it.

Applications are a strict subset of programs.

So, here is an interesting argument, as app is short for Applications, and Applications are a strict subset of programs, doesn't the App Store technically sell Programs, not Apps? Thus, the term is no generic at all. "Program Store" would the generic term. It's the same as a club called "Liqueur Store" (which is TMed.)

I would be shocked if USB 3 came to the Mac. Jobs has already said I see Thunderbolt taking the place of USB altogether.

If they did go on and add either USB3 or blu-ray to Macs, they'd be removing it the following year, as it will become obsolete quite rapidly (maybe even more than USB 2.0).

The USB 2.0 ports will be simply be upgraded to USB 3.0 ports - count on it once the chipsets only support USB 3.0.

ThunderPort is going to be far more expensive than USB 3.0 - USB will stay king for most devices (those needing 100 MB/sec or less). ThunderPort will be a high end special purpose connector for RAID-arrays, breakout boxes, eSATA/USB 3.0 hubs, docking stations, specialized audio/video equipment.

Just like cheap, ubiquitous USB 2.0 killed 1394a and 1394b in the marketplace (and killed FW1600 and FW3200 in the womb), USB 3.0 will be fine for the tasks that most people have.

Because the 3rd party device could be in your neighbours house so your neighbour can see or hear anything that is played through AirPlay from your devices without you knowing. And you might be playing stuff that you wouldn't want your neighbour to see.

Only if i set my neighbors device as a speaker in iTunes...which would happen not too often without me knowing.

Interesting coincidence. I just got off the line with someone who just told me how her brother was killed 2 weeks ago in a car wreck. A 16 year old was doing 55 in a 35 in a brand new Toyota truck, he hit her brother, t-boned, and he was killed instantly.

It's a shame, it's always the innocent ones who die. Every single time I hear about a fatal wreck on the news, the guy driving like an idiot walks away without a scratch and the innocent people in the other car die. I'd have no problem with 16 year old kids driving like idiots if there was a way to guarantee they're the ones who get killed and the person they hit walks away - natural selection would've removed those idiots from the gene pool by now.

And for everyone else on here who is a young male and doesn't drive like an idiot, you can thank Don here for your sky high insurance rates.

Hmmm that is an intresting thought. I saw a demo, over a year ago, of a wireles VoIP phone at Dartmouth University that did just that. They wear them around their neck or use a clip, but it was voice activated, and they actually called them their "Star Trek badges".

    http://www.vocera.com/

So a quad-band gsm iPhone based on the new clip shuffle? Perfect! Speaker phone mode or BT headset .. voice activated.. Sync the phone number and voice dialing through an updated AddressBook. Perfect!

    ;-)

It would have to be really thin, but I like it!

However the real innovation that is going to put Apple over the top is the built-in microfibre wiper blade that squeeges the LCD display after every call. This removes all trace of facial oil and keeps the screen beaming with that showroom shine!

Sorry, I had to sneek that one in.:D

Educated guess would be "big" iPod sales will slump whilst the Nanos & Shuffles will skyrocket.

The Nanos and Shuffles already outsell the big ones. And I suspect that's how it would be regardless of what Apple does with the big model.

Many people just want something that is smaller and cheaper, and don't care that much about big capacity. Period.

Hilarious to all those people who jumped on the THUNDERBOLT bandwagon. No thunderbolt devices yet and they have the hideous old case design.

I didn't want to buy it because i had a feeling 2012 will be new design but i had to buy it because i needed a mac and couldn't wait another year!

and its not like the 2011 MBP's are the same old thing just with thunderbolt! It had a faster processer (with **** GPU in the 13" lol)
